A private one-day tour for two or more people! No other tourists!
NOTE: This tour is only for adults of legal drinking age. No minors are permitted.
During this special day trip, visit famous Peles Castle, built by Romania’s first king, who fell in love with the magnificent mountain scenery of this region. King Carol I also was a forward-thinker; his 170-room royal summer retreat was the world’s first castle to be fully powered by locally-produced electricity.
A castle “pairs well” with wine, so after a guided tour of Peles, you’ll be off to visit two wineries. The first wine cellar produces the oldest sparkling wine in Romania, and the second is in one of the world’s most important wine regions. With a gourmet lunch included, your day will be one to remember!
This is a low active tour! Easy activity, moderate walks, stops when needed.
We will pick you and your group up at the hotel or address where you are staying at 09:00. We will drive about two hours before arriving at Peles Castle, in the picturesque ski-resort town of Sinaia. The castle was built between 1873 and 1883, during the reign of King Carol I. Besides electricity, it had a central heating system and elevators.
After a guided tour of the interior, you can stroll through the courtyards, enjoying the gardens, fountains, and the view of the Bucegi mountains. Many people regard Peles Castle as the most beautiful in Romania.
We then move on to the first wine cellar, Rhein, in the charming town of Aguza, where we’ll learn about sparkling wine production in Romania. Built in 1892, Rhein is Romania’s oldest producer using the traditional “Champenoise” method; between world wars, it was “Supplier of the Royal Court.” Its celebrated Rhein Extra was served at the coronation of King Ferdinand I on 15 October 1922! In 2006, the Rhein Wine Cellar was appointed “Supplier of His Majesty King Michael I of Romania.”
Following a tour of the cellars, you’ll have the opportunity to taste the wine that is served to the Royal Court. We’ll also be served a special Romanian lunch, accompanied by a variety of wines.
Next, we’ll start our return to Bucharest, stopping about halfway to visit LacertA winery. LacertA is located on 82 acres in Dealu Mare, the heart of Romania’s wine country. Renowned for its red wines, the “terroir” on the 45th parallel yields rich, complex, and silky flavors.
LacertA means “lizard,” and is the winery’s mascot. Visitors can watch them scurry among the vines, a sign that the land is ecologically maintained. You’ll find the lizard on the wine labels, too. Walter Friedl, the proprietor at LacertA, notes that Romania was making wine long before France or Italy. After the generous tastings here, you will be searching for Romanian wines when you return home!
Back in our vehicle, it’s only an hour before we reach Bucharest. We’ll drop you off at your hotel and any address you prefer. Another beautiful day in Romania!
