A Taste of Northern Transylvania and Bucovina: 4 Nights/5 Days

4 Nights/5Days

per person

A private tour for two or more people! No other tourists! As always, we are happy to create a specialized tour to meet your interests and requests.

Whether your time in Romania is limited, or you want to know more about this unique region, this tour is for you! We’ll start in the country’s second-largest city, then head into the peasant villages and painted monasteries of Bucovina. Each night, you will stay at a 4-star hotel. We’ll stop at places not found anywhere else in the world! And because this is your private tour, we can adapt the schedule. Sounds perfect, doesn’t it?

This is a moderately active tour! Most days are light to moderately paced - but two days are strenuous - with 2-8 miles of walking, lots of stairs, and hilly terrain.

Day 1

A typical itinerary for this tour

This is the basic itinerary for this tour, but we want to make it perfect for you and your group. Contact us and we will help you create a trip that you will never forget!

You’ll fly into Cluj (official name Cluj-Napoca, airport code CLJ) which is a modern, international airport in the heart of Transylvania. We will meet you and transport you to your 4-star hotel. Depending on your arrival time, we can give you a panoramic tour of this historic city, take you to important attractions in Cluj, or show you the best places to relax after your journey. We offer all our guests a welcome dinner at a traditional restaurant.

One thing we’ll make sure you don’t miss is the traditional “chimney cake,” known as kurtoskalacs. This hollow, sweet bread, covered with sugar, goes back to 1241, when Transylvania was under siege by the Mongols. You’ll find it fresh, warm, and ready to tear apart, from the local vendors.

Day 2

After breakfast, we depart for the beautiful region of Maramures and the town of Sighetu Marmatiei, better known as Sighet. Sighet is a city with a long history of diversity and tolerance. It is the home of the Nobel Peace Prize winner and Holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel.

En route, we can make stops at these special places:
• Rohia: Saint Anne Monastery
• Sapanta: Peri Monastery
• The Merry Cemetery (Sapanta)
• Sighet Village Museum
• Elie Wiesel Memorial House & Museum of Jewish Culture in Maramures

Dinner is on your own. Your guide will help you find what you want. We recommend Casa Iurca Restaurant, which offers a traditional Romanian menu and folk dances. Spend a restful night in a 4-star hotel in Sighetu Marmatiel.

Day 3

Another full day! After breakfast, we will continue to Gura Humorului. We’ll make a stop in Barsana Village to visit one of the region’s woodcarvers, to see how the famous wooden gates of Maramures are crafted. We’ll also visit Birsana Monastery before crossing Prislop Pass and entering one of Romania’s most historic regions, Bucovina.

Be prepared to be dazzled by Voronet Monastery, the most famous of the UNESCO-designated painted monasteries. It is painted in a unique, vibrant blue, known as “Voronet Blue.” Built in 1488, after a defeat against the powerful Turks by Romanian hero, Stefan the Great, experts still don’t know which elements were used to create this unique shade. Voronet Monastery has been called the “Sistine Chapel” outside of the Vatican. You will see why—and agree!

After the visit, the afternoon is yours to enjoy. Walk and enjoy dinner. As always, your guide can make recommendations. Sleep peacefully at a 4-star hotel in Gura Humorlui.

Day 4

Enjoy breakfast, then we leave for Cluj. We’ll stop for visits at Moldovita monasteries, and the amazing Museum of Decorated Eggs, in Varna. One of Romania’s cultural arts is the exquisite decoration of eggs. Painted with care, and full of symbolism, this tradition is passed down through generations, with each region giving it a unique representation. You will never look at Easter eggs the same way again!

Before arriving in Cluj, we will visit Turda Salt Mine. Turda was once one of Transylvania’s most wealthy towns, and the first Romanian town to have gas lighting, thanks to the income from its salt mine. Today, that mine space is where you can ride a Ferris Wheel, play miniature golf, or even rent a small boat.

Back in Cluj, you will stay in another 4-star hotel. Spend your free time visiting the city and its many attractions, at your leisure. Dinner is on your own.  As always, our guide is available to help you.
